Signing up for National Grid Service in Downtown Brooklyn
If you are moving into a new home in Brooklyn, you will need to call National Grid's customer service line or visit your local office about 7 days before your move in date to set up national gas and/or electricity service. You will need to provide information including:
- Full name
- Social security or passport number
- New address
- Planned move in date
- Phone number
- May need to provide a lease copy

Choosing an Alternative ESCO Supplier
National Grid is your local utility in Brooklyn, meaning they are your default provider of natural gas and/or electricity. National Grid automatically provides the following services:
- Delivery, or the cost of getting energy to your home
- Supply, or the cost of energy you consume and customer service
Be sure to set up your National Grid account before deciding on an ESCO, since your ESCO will need your National Grid account information to coordinate service. Most ESCOs will not charge a fee to open a new account, but you should be aware of other common contract terms. Learn more about how ESCOs work.
You will have the opportunity to choose between variable and fixed rate plans with most ESCOs, however we recommend fixed rate plans across the board.
If you are moving out of National Grid service area, you will need to call customer service at least 3 days in advance to be sure that service is turned off in time. A technician will need to come to your home for natural gas customers, to get an accurate reading of your meter for your final bill.
In order to avoid early termination fees with your ESCO, which are common, you may need to notify your ESCO that you are moving 30 days or more in advance. Be sure to look at your ESCO's contract conditions for specific instructions.
Bill Charges with National Grid
The New York Public Service Commission (NYPSC) regulates all rates with National Grid, which means that your rates will never change unless NYPSC has determined that actual costs of doing businesses have changed for National Grid.
